  • from OLT -- TOP 500 REVIEWERVINE VOICE : Christmas is for children, after all... ( 4.0 out of 5 stars )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from myrtle -- One More Sentimental Christmas Story to Read and Share with Others : Many thanks to OLT for this recommendation! Loved reading about the three children, especially Moppet aged 4 and a quarter. Add the children, the old curmudgeon, Sir John, who did have a heart after all, the incredible friend Mr Danby whom everyone would want to have visit them any time of year and you have the making of a touching warmhearted Christmas story. We all need to be reminded about forgiveness and reconciliation at this time of year. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2019 )

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Andrea L -- Good Christmas Story : This was a free audio book I received from Audible and it's a short story (3 hours) Christmas story in England in the 1800's. A crusty old man is asked to take in a few children for the holidays to share the holiday in his home and help out the servants. This was a nice Christmas story and I enjoyed listening to it while I cooked, cleaned and also for a few minutes at bedtime. This book got me more in the Christmas spirit. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Colorado Cowgirl -- Thanks audible for giving me this Christmas gift! : This was a sweet and sentimental Christmas story set in Victorian Cornwall. It was both heartwarming and heart-wrenching with the fractured relationship between a rather cold and distant father and his two daughters. It definitely reflected the norms for the period where daughters were a disappointment to a nobleman who needed an heir, and marriages were usually arrangements and loveless. Sir John only came to appreciate his daughters too late. The real star of the tale is the sweet little 5 year-old "hireling" (no spoilers) who helps John understand the real joy and love surrounding Christmas. I did enjoy the short story and I thank audible for giving it to us as a holiday gift! ( Reviewed in the United States on December 15, 2018 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from The Voracious Reader -- Heart-warming but Sometimes Blah : This heart-warming story for Christmas starts when three British friends decide to hire some children to come for a visit to make their Christmas more meaningful. I enjoyed the narration, but some of the writing elements in the story were not as good. For one thing, the occasional use of first person pulled me out of the story, but this happened less frequently after the first. Using “Moppet, Lassie, and Laddie,” instead of the children’s real names sounded odd. I knew who the children were when they first appeared so it came as no surprise near the end, but that only made the story a bit more enjoyable. The gist of the ending was good, but the execution was bland with Sir John thinking he had things figured out and a lot of just telling about the next few years. What could have held tension and drama became blah. Yet, overall, it was a good, fast story. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 21, 2018 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Aurora Dawn -- Mr. Darcy's Christmas Children : I've never been a big Pride and Prejudice fan, but this Christmas story in which Mr. Danby brings three children to the home of a curmudgeonly old friend to amuse the household over the holidays is an absolute delight for those who enjoy Jane Austin period pieces. The scenery and Christmas traditions are described with all the vibrant colour and gentle grace of an Austin manor house and the gentlefolk are appropriately proper but touched with an occasional whisper of dry humor, but it is the irrepressible Moppet that steals the show and captures your heart as she did those of every character in the tale. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Ms. Kathleen Herron -- Exceptional story : I've read Mary Elizabeth Braddon's Lady Audley's Secret so wanted to read more. This lovely story was truly a revelation. Some twists and turns but ultimately the perfect ending. This is now my annual Christmas reading. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 17, 2019 )
